Omega Reintroduces ‘The First Omega in Space’ with a Modern Twist

Omega has brought back one of its most iconic timepieces, ‘The First Omega in Space,’ now updated with a Co-Axial Master Chronometer movement. This reimagined version celebrates Omega’s historic role in space exploration while incorporating modern materials and advanced horological technology. Inspired by the original CK 2998 model, worn by astronaut Walter Schirra during his Sigma 7 mission in 1962, this updated edition remains true to its heritage while offering today’s highest standards of precision and performance.

The Return of a Space Icon

The original CK 2998 was first introduced in 1959 as the second generation of the Speedmaster family. It was characterized by its slim Alpha hands, symmetrical case, and a dark bezel insert replacing tthe engraved version of the CK 2915. These features caught the attention of NASA astronaut Walter Schirra, who wore the watch during his Mercury mission on October 3, 1962. That mission earned the CK 2998 its nickname, ‘The First Omega in Space,’ a title that cemented Omega’s legacy in space exploration.

Today’s re-edition of the Speedmaster honors that legacy with a modern take on the classic design. The 39.7mm case is made of polished and brushed stainless steel, while the black bezel features the iconic tachymeter scale, including the famous “Dot Over Ninety,” a hallmark of early Speedmaster models. Beneath the scratch-resistant, hesalite-like sapphire crystal, the grey-blue dial is CVD-coated to replicate the tone of the original CK 2998 watches produced in the 1960s.

Modern Technology Meets Vintage Design

While the new model remains visually faithful to its 1962 predecessor, it is powered by the latest Omega Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861. This hand-wound movement is METAS certified, ensuring the highest standards of precision, performance, and magnetic resistance. The 3861 is the evolution of the 1861, 861, and ultimately the Calibre 321, which originally powered the CK 2998, offering a modern upgrade to a legendary movement. The watch provides a 50-hour power reserve and resists magnetic fields up to 15,000 gauss, offering unparalleled reliability.

The watch also features vintage-inspired details such as Alpha hands filled with Super-LumiNova, a Seahorse medallion on the case back, and the engravings “THE FIRST OMEGA IN SPACE” and “OCTOBER 3, 1962.” These elements, combined with Omega’s advanced movement technology, ensure that this timepiece appeals to both collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate the brand’s historical significance and technical innovation.
