Drawing from the Aztec ritual of the New Fire, which celebrates the rebirth of the sun, the Fuego Nuevo features a dial made from one of the oldest meteorites on Earth, the Muonionalusta.

The Dial: Meteorite and Precision Engraving

The Fuego Nuevo‘s dial is crafted from a disc of Muonionalusta meteorite, formed approximately 4.6 billion years ago. The dial’s intricate engravings, which represent the Sun Stone or Piedra del Sol, were created using laser technology capable of ultra-short pulses in the femtosecond range. This precision allowed for the 9,800 lines required to replicate the Sun Stone’s motifs, paying homage to the Aztec’s deep astronomical knowledge.

Jean-Marie Schaller, Owner and Creative Director of Louis Moinet, explains the inspiration: “I have always been fascinated by ancient civilizations, especially Mesoamerican cultures and their very advanced astronomical knowledge. They saw the cosmos as more than just a collection of stars but also as a great symbol of life’s eternal cycles. To reproduce this vision on the Fuego Nuevo, I chose the Muonionalusta meteorite and laser engraving to reflect the cosmic cycles. As for the mechanics, the flying tourbillon was the natural choice, because its rotations reminded me of the constant renewal of time and infinity.”

The dial is built in three levels to create a sense of depth, with engraving depths of 0.2 and 0.1 millimeters. A ring of aventurine adds contrast to the base, enhancing the dial’s overall appearance. This meticulous attention to detail merges modern technology with historical art, creating a visual representation of the cosmic cycles central to Aztec belief.

Technical Excellence: The Flying Tourbillon

The Fuego Nuevo is equipped with the Louis Moinet LM135 caliber, a manual-winding movement that includes a flying tourbillon. The tourbillon, located at six o’clock, is a key technical feature, enhancing the watch’s precision by counteracting the effects of gravity. The movement operates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4Hz) and offers a 96-hour power reserve, thanks to its double-barrel system. This configuration, known as “volte-face,” allows for efficient energy release, ensuring a reliable timekeeping experience.

The Case: Red Gold and Titanium Construction

The Fuego Nuevo is housed in a 40 mm case made from 18K red gold with an inner case of Grade 5 titanium for added durability. The watch’s case features well-defined curves and polished surfaces, with a sapphire dome that allows a clear view of the detailed engravings on the dial. Openworked lugs seamlessly integrate with the alligator strap, combining elegance and practicality.

The design of the Fuego Nuevo is heavily influenced by the Piedra del Sol, a monumental sculpture created during the reign of Aztec Emperor Axayacatl. The New Fire ceremony, which marked the end of a 52-year cycle and the rebirth of the sun, is central to the watch’s theme. Schaller’s vision for the Fuego Nuevo was to encapsulate the cycles of time and the universe, with the flying tourbillon symbolizing the endless renewal of time.
