Holthinrichs Introduces the Ornament Nouveau
Holthinrichs Watches has announced its latest creation, the Ornament Nouveau. This project, in development since 2017, features the company’s first in-house movement and a unique sculptural design.
Architectural Inspirations
The Ornament Nouveau is inspired by the architectural styles of Art Nouveau and Early Modernism. Michiel Holthinrichs, founder of Holthinrichs Watches, states, “I want people to experience the emotional sensations that architecture can evoke through its spatial, structural, and artisanal complexity: architecture on the wrist. That is why our watches are named after the architectural ornament.”
The design philosophy takes cues from architects like Eugène Viollet-le-Duc and Victor Horta, who integrated modern technologies and organic forms into their works. Holthinrichs Watches aims to reflect this blend of design, materials, and craftsmanship in their timepieces.
Horlogerie Brut Concept
The Ornament Nouveau incorporates elements intentionally left unfinished, highlighting the manufacturing process as part of its design. This concept, called “Horlogerie Brut,” emphasizes texture, material honesty, and raw aesthetics. The titanium case exemplifies this approach with a mix of raw and refined finishes.
Innovative Titanium 3D-Printed Case
The case of the Ornament Nouveau features a 3D-printed titanium structure with double-curved surfaces and organically shaped lugs. This design is achieved through a detailed process involving layering and sintering titanium particles.
First In-House Movement
The Ornament Nouveau includes Holthinrichs Watches’ first in-house developed movement, a notable achievement for the company and the Dutch watchmaking industry. Developed in collaboration with a precision manufacturer near Rotterdam, the movement features a double concave mainplate and intricately finished stainless steel bridges, creating a three-dimensional effect.
The “Holthinbridge” and Eclipse Dial
The movement includes a variable inertia balance wheel suspended in a three-dimensional glass bridge, referred to as the “Holthinbridge.” The watch also features an Eclipse Dial, made of UV-sensitive photochromic material that darkens in sunlight to protect the movement’s oils and provide a dynamic visual experience.
Craftsmanship and Materials
The strap is crafted from the tail of the alligator, chosen for its distinctive scales and durability, reflecting the watch’s commitment to organic and luxurious design elements.
Presentation and Availability
Presented in a custom stainless steel sculpture created through selective laser melting, the Ornament Nouveau is available in a limited edition of 100 pieces, with bespoke options available upon request.
