The summer of sport in Paris has been reignited with the official commencement of the Paralympic Games Paris 2024. Marking this significant event, Omega‘s countdown clock near the Eiffel Tower reached zero, coinciding with the vibrant Opening Ceremony along the iconic Champs-Elysées. This moment signaled the beginning of Omega’s role as the Official Timekeeper for this inspiring competition.
Omega’s Continued Legacy in Timekeeping
Running until September 8th, the Paralympic Games Paris 2024 will see approximately 4,400 athletes competing in 22 sports, all under the watchful eyes of a global audience. Omega’s involvement with the Paralympic Games dates back to Albertville 1992, where it first assumed the role of Official Timekeeper. Since then, Omega’s partnership with the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has deepened, reflecting a natural progression of its long-standing timekeeping responsibilities at the Olympic Games—a role it has fulfilled 31 times since 1932.
Precision Timing for 549 Events
At this year’s Paralympic Games, Omega will measure 549 individual events, each presenting its own set of specific requirements and challenges. Drawing on decades of experience and continuous innovation, Omega is equipped to deliver precise and reliable results at every crucial moment.
Omega will employ many of the same advanced technologies used at the Olympic Games, such as electronic starting pistols and photofinish cameras. Additionally, Omega will implement specialized equipment tailored for the Paralympic Games, including flashing start lights for deaf athletes and a fifth beam in its Photocell technology designed to detect the unique body patterns of athletes in wheelchair races.
