Phillips in Association with Bacs & Russo Announces “TOKI（刻）”: A Tribute to Japanese Watch Collecting
Phillips in Association with Bacs & Russo is set to host a groundbreaking thematic auction titled “TOKI（刻）” this November in Hong Kong. This event will be the first ever dedicated exclusively to the Japanese watch collecting world, reflecting Japan’s significant impact on global horology. The sale will be held at Phillips’ Asia headquarters in the West Kowloon Cultural District, alongside the Hong Kong Watch Auction XIX.
Japan’s deep-rooted passion for precision and craftsmanship has long been evident in its approach to both collecting and manufacturing watches. The country’s watchmaking tradition, which began in the late 19th century, is one of the earliest in the world. Japanese collectors, known for their discerning taste and meticulous research, have played a crucial role in the global watch market’s success. For instance, the Japanese market was instrumental in the success of independent watchmakers like Philippe Dufour and F.P. Journe, with a significant portion of their notable pieces being sold there.
The “TOKI（刻）” sale will showcase an array of exceptional timepieces, including models made exclusively for the Japanese market, watches previously owned by esteemed Japanese collectors, and unique creations by Japanese independent watchmakers such as Naoya Hida and Hajime Asaoka. This auction not only highlights significant global brands but also pays homage to one of the most historically important watch markets.
Among the early highlights of the auction are an Omega Speedmaster Apollo XI 25th Anniversary, distinguished by its Takashimaya stamp, and a never-worn Rolex Cosmograph Daytona purchased from the prestigious Matsuzakaya department store. These pieces will be featured in touring exhibitions and appraisal sessions in Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka throughout July.
