Baume & Mercier Hampton Polyptyque Edition – Musée Soulages 10th Anniversary

Baume & Mercier Unveils Second Unique Timepiece in Emotive Collaboration with Painter Pierre Soulages and Musée Soulages

In a poignant revelation, Baume & Mercier introduces its latest masterpiece, the “Hampton Polyptyque Edition – Musée Soulages 10th Anniversary” watch. This extraordinary creation, inspired by Pierre Soulages’ Peinture 324 x 362 cm, 1986, Polyptyque I Edition, marks the brand’s second homage to the iconic artist, showcasing a profound collaboration with the Musée Soulages of Rodez.

CEO David Chaumet shares the deep connection with Pierre Soulages, stating, “Pierre Soulages is connected with Baume & Mercier on many levels: humanistic and artistic, cordial and technical, and through the museum and timepieces that bear his name.” Following the success of the first “Hampton Hommage à Pierre Soulages” released in February 2022, this second watch represents the materialization of their dream and a continued tribute to the legendary artist.

The collaborative journey began over a year ago when Baume & Mercier approached the Musée Soulages, known internationally for Pierre Soulages’ work. The meeting at the artist’s villa in Sète in June 2021 initiated a creative process resulting in this unique timepiece. According to David Chaumet, “This one is inspired by our first encounter with the artist in person when Pierre Soulages and his wife Colette invited us to their villa in Sète.”

Benoît Decron, Director of Musée Soulages Rodez, emphasizes the human relations that run through this cultural partnership, highlighting the connection through the mechanics of time.

The special edition, “Hampton Polyptyque Edition – Musée Soulages 10th Anniversary,” not only celebrates the artist but also commemorates the 10th anniversary of the Musée Soulages. The watch encapsulates the union of contemporary art and Baume & Mercier’s watchmaking vision, promising a timepiece that stands as both a visual marvel and a technological achievement.

Reflecting on the heritage of Pierre Soulages, Baume & Mercier sees designing a timepiece as a profound expression of admiration for the artist’s work. The watch pays tribute to the Noir-Lumière series, later named Outrenoir, showcasing Soulages’ mastery in playing with black textures and light effects. The painting Peinture 324 x 362 cm, 1986, Polyptyque I, serves as the inspiration for the dial of the new timepiece.

The Hampton Collection, known for its streamlined rectangular case, offers the perfect canvas for the faithful reproduction of Soulages’ masterpiece. The design, marked by monumental technical and aesthetic complexity, required innovative 3D printing technology for a precise representation on a smaller scale.

The exclusive watch presentation case, inspired by the contemporary architecture of Musée Soulages, pays homage to the artist’s legacy. Crafted in weathering steel, it reflects the iridescent rust effects, symbolizing the passage of time.

The watch features an automatic mechanical Swiss movement (ETA 2892), showcasing exquisite finishes, a 42-hour power reserve, and water resistance to 5 ATM. The cellulose strap lined in apple leather complements the overall design, offering both comfort and sophistication.

Baume & Mercier expresses heartfelt gratitude to Pierre Soulages for the artistic vision that continues to influence the brand’s creations. The “Hampton Polyptyque Edition – Musée Soulages 10th Anniversary” stands as a timeless testament to the enduring connection between art and watchmaking, promising enthusiasts a unique blend of artistic finesse and technical prowess.
