Exclusively unveiled at SIAR, the brand-new Big Bang Unico Titanium Green Ceramic embraces the hue of the cactus, the iconic plant of the Mexican desert. In a groundbreaking move, the rubber strap is adorned with a layer crafted from this iconic Mexican plant. This limited edition masterpiece consists of just 50 pieces and is a testament to its unique, technical, and innovative design.
From Mexico City to the entire country, Mexico has always been a shining star in the Hublot galaxy, with an enduring passion and affection for the brand. This latest addition to the Big Bang collection, created specifically for SIAR (Salón Internacional Alta Relojería) to be held in Mexico City from October 17 to 19, 2023, pays genuine homage to Mexico, from its case to its bracelet!
This tribute is twofold. Firstly, it’s the strap that distinguishes this timepiece: Its rubber core is enveloped by a second skin made from cactus. A remarkable first for Hublot and very likely the watchmaking industry as a whole. The unveiling of this innovation in Mexico, the iconic home of the cactus, is particularly fitting.
Why, you may ask? Because our world is currently grappling with significant damage to its ecosystems, demanding better alignment of flora and fauna. Plant-based straps present an eco-friendly alternative to leather straps, and the cactus strap of the new Big Bang Unico Titanium Green Ceramic is a prime example. Not only does it match the durability, color, and performance of leather, but it’s also nearly infinitely renewable, 100% natural, produced without chemicals, and fully traceable.
This aligns perfectly with Hublot’s commitment to present a distinctive and groundbreaking project at SIAR. But there’s more to it: Cactus skin is non-allergenic, nearly scratch-resistant, offers a wide range of finishes and colors, and is remarkably soft to the touch. It can be cultivated with minimal water usage and dyed entirely using organic dyes. These qualities underscore its suitability for watchmaking, as part of an innovative and responsible approach.
But that’s not the sole nod to Mexico. The timepiece, adorned in a deep and consistent green, draws inspiration from the national flag, where the first green stripe symbolizes the nation’s spirit of independence. This symbol is potent, historically rich, and full of significance—a spirit of independence that resonates with the Hublot Manufacture, where innovation and disruption reign supreme.
To achieve this uniform green, Hublot combines various areas of expertise. The bezel boasts a ceramic finish that perfectly matches the natural shades of the strap in a harmonious green hue. The surface undergoes micro-blasting and polishing, maintaining its scratch-resistant and unchanging nature.
The flange and small seconds at 3 o’clock are coated with lacquer in perfect harmony with the bezel. Furthermore, this new Big Bang is a pure skeleton masterpiece, revealing the intricate mechanics of its Manufacture caliber Unico, providing a generous 3-day power reserve. At 6 o’clock, the iconic column wheel is prominently featured. The date disc is intricately embossed to ensure each day seamlessly passes through a specially designed cut-out at the heart of the small seconds without compromising its geometry or harmony. The watch also includes a second strap with a Velcro® attachment.
