Hublot’s MP-10 Tourbillon Wins Red Dot Design Award for Product Design

Hublot’s MP-10 Tourbillon Weight Energy System has received the prestigious Red Dot Design Award for Product Design on June 24th, 2024. This recognition, awarded by an international jury of designers and experts, solidifies Hublot’s position at the forefront of innovative and exceptional design.

Reinventing Automatic Winding

Traditional automatic movements feature a flat dial paired with an oscillating weight on the case-back side. However, the MP-10 breaks from this convention. The MP-10 is read vertically and lacks both a dial and hands. So, how is it wound? Hublot’s engineers ingeniously retained the weight principle but reimagined it vertically to align with the movement. They also duplicated this principle.

On either side of the central architecture, two white gold blocks are arranged on a vertical axis, free to move. To prevent collisions with the banking, Hublot developed a shock absorber system. These vertical weights engage a rack and wind the movement bidirectionally. This exclusive Hublot innovation, for which a patent is pending, provides the MP-10 with a power reserve exceeding 48 hours. The watch is wound manually via a crown at 12 o’clock, while time setting is managed using a second crown on the case-back side, maintaining the fluidity of the design.

Unprecedented Complexity

The exterior design of the MP-10 matches the ingenuity of its movement. The case is constructed from two simple pieces—middle and case-back in shiny micro-blasted titanium. However, the sapphire crystal atop is Hublot’s most complex to date, featuring inclined planes on three axes. The integrated rubber strap is also the most refined ever designed by the Manufacture, showcasing Hublot’s dedication to both form and function.

Red Dot Design Award

The Red Dot Design Award, established in 1954, is one of the world’s largest and most renowned design competitions. It is held annually across three disciplines: product design, brand and communication design, and prototypes and design concepts. An independent jury of international professors, designers, and journalists evaluates each entry individually, assessing the design quality through a rigorous process that includes testing and discussion over several days. Winners receive the Red Dot or the Red Dot: Best of the Best quality label, symbolizing excellence in design.

This year’s accolade for the MP-10 Tourbillon Weight Energy System highlights Hublot’s innovative spirit and commitment to pushing the boundaries of watchmaking design.
