IWC Schaffhausen has introduced the Pilot’s Watch Mark XX Patrouille Suisse, a special edition timepiece that honors the Swiss Air Force’s aerobatic team, Patrouille Suisse. Limited to 250 units, this release marks the fifth collaboration between IWC and the flight team, and it is the first in the series to feature a titanium case.
Acknowledging Aviation Precision and Watchmaking Craft
The Patrouille Suisse, established in 1964, is known for its display of precision and technical skill, qualities that IWC Schaffhausen seeks to reflect in its timepieces. The team, which pilots the red-and-white F-5 E Tiger aircraft, serves as the inspiration for this watch.
This edition of the Pilot’s Watch aims to highlight the parallels between the precision required in both aviation and watchmaking. IWC Schaffhausen’s CEO, Christoph Grainger-Herr, stated in the press release that the watch “embodies the precision and performance demonstrated by the Patrouille Suisse,” drawing attention to the shared values of both fields.
Features of the Pilot’s Watch Mark XX Patrouille Suisse
The Pilot’s Watch Mark XX Patrouille Suisse is notable for its use of titanium in the 40-millimeter case, marking a first for this series. Titanium is recognized for its strength-to-weight ratio, offering durability while being lighter than steel. The case is finished with a sand-blasted matte grey surface.
The case back features an engraving of three aircraft in formation, along with the inscription “Tribute to Patrouille Suisse” and the watch’s individual limitation number. The grey dial is complemented by black hands with luminescent coating, enhancing legibility in various lighting conditions.
Powered by the IWC-manufactured 32111 caliber, the watch provides an automatic movement with a 120-hour power reserve. The strap is made of black textile, secured by a titanium pin buckle, and includes the EasX-Change system, allowing for easy strap changes.
Practical and Collectible
The Pilot’s Watch Mark XX Patrouille Suisse is designed with professional functionality in mind, while also being suitable for collectors. The limited availability of 250 pieces adds to its appeal as a collectible item.
This edition of IWC Schaffhausen’s Pilot’s Watch combines elements of aviation history, advanced materials, and precise engineering. It serves as a tool for pilots and a tribute to the Patrouille Suisse team.
