MING 37.08 SAND

In the pursuit of a more whimsical and playful aesthetic, the introduction of the inaugural model in a new series of accessible, deep-relief textured watches is showcased—the Ming 37.08 Sand. The dial draws inspiration from diverse sources, including seabed ripples in calm, shallow waters, the radiant sun casting its glow on windblown powder, and the panoramic view while flying over a desert landscape. This timepiece offers a versatile canvas, open to interpretation and further enhanced by the choice of accompanying straps.

Measuring at 38×10.9mm, the watch maintains the well-known 37-series case in stainless steel. It features the series’ characteristic narrow bezel and brushed-polished case finish, creating a visual illusion of increased size and decreased thickness, all while ensuring a comfortable fit on the wrist.

To achieve the same visual depth on a coarse matte blasted dial as opposed to a smooth one, a substantial increase in dial thickness is implemented without altering the case proportions. The internal construction deviates from previous designs, eliminating the sapphire layer on the dial. Markings and indices find their place on the top crystal, characterized by laser-hollowed cavities filled with luminous HyCeram. This innovative design is complemented by a new matte gold hand set, carefully crafted to harmonize with the dial color and the flowing lines.

The dial’s development is attributed to Ming Thein, utilizing 3D CAD after studying images of dunes, waves, and wave propagation theory. Adjustments are made to ensure compatibility with the aesthetics of a small surface and height limitations, even with increased dial thickness. The 3D model is then translated into a tangible form through machining the negative relief into a hard tool steel master, serving as the reference die for the stamped brass dial. Subsequent processes involve coarse-blasting, galvanization, and the application of colored lacquer to achieve the desired pale gold color.

Powering the watch is the hand-winding Sellita SW210.M1, presented in a distinctive execution featuring skeletonized rhodium bridges on a dark matte anthracite base. This powerhouse is coupled with a color-neutral mid-grey calf strap from Jean Rousseau, chosen strategically to enhance the dial’s distinctive color.
