Omega is ushering in a new era in watchmaking precision with the introduction of chronometric testing within its groundbreaking Laboratoire de Précision.
For over half a century, the Swiss watchmaking industry has relied on COSC (Contrôle Officiel Suisse Des Chronomètres) for certifying the accuracy of mechanical movements. However, Omega’s Laboratoire de Précision, officially authorized by the Swiss Accreditation Service (SAS), now offers an alternative and independent testing platform alongside COSC.
Established by Omega, a brand renowned for its commitment to elevating watchmaking standards, the Laboratoire de Précision operates as a neutral and independent entity, open to all watch brands and movement manufacturers.
The laboratory’s neutrality and integrity were prerequisites for its accreditation as a “testing Laboratory according to ISO/IEC17025:2017” by the Swiss Accreditation Service, ensuring reliable and impartial testing of watch movements. Operating in accordance with the ISO 3159 standard, commonly referred to as “chronometer” testing, the laboratory employs rigorous testing methods.
In addition to standard chronometric equipment, the Laboratoire de Précision has developed proprietary technologies to conduct precise measurements under varied conditions such as different positions and temperatures, surpassing current industry standards.
The laboratory’s advanced testing process involves continuous, comprehensive measurements throughout the entire 15-day chronometer testing period, a significant enhancement compared to the current practice of taking measurements once every 24 hours. Every beat of the calibre is meticulously measured and assessed, with ten times greater measurement accuracy than the industry standard.
The wealth of data gathered during these tests enables watch brands and manufacturers to gain profound insights into the chronometric performance of their movements, facilitating ongoing improvements in precision.
For Omega, the Laboratoire de Précision represents a significant advancement in precision standards, complementing its cutting-edge Spirate™ System technology. With access to extensive data and technical insights, Omega can refine its calibres and enhance its reputation as a premier watchmaker.
Furthermore, the integration of chronometric testing into Omega’s supply chain underscores its commitment to excellence as part of the Swatch Group, utilizing internal expertise to elevate standards across the board.
With facilities in Bienne and Villeret, Switzerland, the Laboratoire de Précision spans over 1000m2, providing a dedicated space for comprehensive chronometric testing.
