Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch White Lacquered Dial

Omega Launches Newest Edition of Iconic Speedmaster Moonwatch with Lacquered White Dial

Renowned as the epitome of chronographs on Earth, the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch debuts its latest edition, featuring a striking lacquered white dial inspired by space exploration and the collection’s illustrious heritage.

Anticipation for this captivating model has been building among Moonwatch enthusiasts since November 2023 when the very first edition was spotted adorning the wrist of Omega brand ambassador, Daniel Craig, at the Planet Omega Exhibition in New York. Now, the design is officially unveiled and available for public purchase.

The most notable feature of the watch is its rare white dial. Initially conceived in 1957, the original Speedmaster aimed to provide an effortlessly readable display with exceptional legibility, hence the white hands and indexes on a black dial. This new iteration reverses the colorway while maintaining the same level of readability.

Omega not only presents the new dial in white with black detailing and updated applied indexes but also introduces a striking red Speedmaster logo and applies a glossy lacquered finish to the entire surface – a first for the Moonwatch’s step dial.

The inspiration behind this new aesthetic is the white and black hues of astronaut spacesuits, particularly those worn during extravehicular activities (EVA) such as spacewalks. This connection holds significance as the Speedmaster Moonwatch has been officially worn by NASA astronauts since 1965, earning its title as the first watch worn on the Moon. Additionally, red lines on the suits since Apollo 13 in 1970 signify the commander’s rank.

Another compelling reason for the white dial harks back to 1969 when Omega created the ALASKA I prototype as part of a secret NASA project to develop the perfect space watch. After extensive experimentation, Omega chose a white dial for its effective thermal reflection coefficient. The red Speedmaster logo on the new model pays homage to the protective red case of the original ALASKA I watch.

Beyond the white dial, Omega unveils additional craftsmanship details. The 42 mm stainless steel timepiece is paired with a comfortable and vintage-inspired stainless steel bracelet featuring five arched links per row, adorned with polished and brushed detailing. Additionally, two alternative versions are available, one on a black micro-perforated leather strap with red and white stitching, and the other on an anti-bacterial rubber strap featuring a moon surface pattern in positive relief on the underside for enhanced comfort and aesthetics.

For enthusiasts, each timepiece’s black anodized aluminum bezel boasts the renowned “Dot over Ninety” on the tachymeter scale, while inside beats the Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861 – the latest iteration of the legendary Calibre 321 trusted by astronauts on the Moon.
