Marking 50 Years of the Turbo: Porsche Design Releases the Chronograph 1 – 50 Years 911 Turbo Edition

The Porsche 911 Turbo has been a significant presence in the automotive world since its unveiling at the 1974 Paris Motor Show. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of this iconic vehicle, Porsche Design has introduced the Chronograph 1 – 50 Years 911 Turbo Edition, a limited-edition watch that pays homage to the car’s legacy. With only 500 pieces available, this timepiece reflects both the history of the 911 Turbo and Porsche’s continued commitment to precision engineering.

A Continuation of Design Heritage

The foundation of this anniversary chronograph dates back to 1972, with the creation of the Chronograph I by Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche. Known for being the first all-black wristwatch, the Chronograph I was inspired by the clean and functional design of the Porsche 911. The new Chronograph 1 – 50 Years 911 Turbo Edition integrates this design philosophy, merging classic elements with contemporary materials and technology.

Key Features and Design

In keeping with the performance focus of the 911 Turbo, the Chronograph 1 is built from lightweight titanium, treated with a black titanium carbide coating for durability. The watch features a sapphire crystal case back with sevenfold anti-reflective coating, allowing a view of the internal movement. The case back also includes an engraving of the “Turbo” logo, along with the years 1974 and 2024, marking the anniversary.

The dial design draws parallels to the original 911 Turbo’s dashboard, featuring three sub-dials reminiscent of the car’s instrument panel. The matte black dial contrasts with white hands and indices, along with a red stopwatch second hand, ensuring clear readability. The “Flyback” function is labeled in the same font as the vintage 911 dashboard, and the dial is marked with the Porsche Design logo from the 1970s.

Precision Engineering

The 911 Turbo has historically represented Porsche’s advancements in technology, and the Chronograph 1 – 50 Years 911 Turbo Edition continues this tradition. Produced at Porsche’s watchmaking facility in Solothurn, Switzerland, the watch is powered by the Porsche Design Caliber WERK 01.240, a movement certified by COSC for its precision. The flyback function allows for efficient timekeeping, combining the start, stop, and reset functions into a single action.

The watch also includes a rotor designed after the Fuchs wheel, an iconic element of the 911 Turbo. The rotor, finished in matte black chrome with the Porsche crest, ties the watch to the car’s legacy.

Versatility in Design

The Chronograph 1 – 50 Years 911 Turbo Edition is offered with a beige textile leather strap that features a quick-change system with black Velcro fasteners, mirroring the interior materials of the original 911 Turbo. The strap’s color reflects the Beige Grey Metallic paint and leather interior of the first 911 Turbo. Additionally, a titanium bracelet with a black titanium carbide coating is included as an alternative option.
