Rado’s Latest Collaboration with Kunihiko Morinaga Unveils the True Square x Kunihiko Morinaga Special Edition
In 2017, Rado joined forces with the visionary Japanese fashion designer Kunihiko Morinaga to craft a limited edition timepiece that seamlessly merged the brand’s expertise in materials with Morinaga’s signature color-changing technology. Now, Rado and Morinaga proudly present their latest collaborative masterpiece: the Rado True Square x Kunihiko Morinaga Special Edition watch.
The newest addition to the Rado lineup is nothing short of visually stunning. Boasting a sleek, squarish polished black monobloc high-tech ceramic case and crown, it exudes sophistication from every angle. The black PVD sandblasted titanium case back is adorned with a sapphire crystal etched with the words: “KUNIHIKO MORINAGA SPECIAL EDITION,” adding a touch of exclusivity to the timepiece.
One of the standout features of the watch is its transparent dial, a hallmark of Morinaga’s distinctive style. Treated with a photochromic coating, the dial undergoes a mesmerizing color transformation in response to varying light conditions. Morinaga explains, “The intent was to add color and take it away. I tried to capture the ethereal nature of time in the design by integrating a photochromic lens that changes color based on ultraviolet light.”
True to Morinaga’s vision, the dial darkens when exposed to sunlight, gradually transitioning to grey and eventually becoming transparent as dusk falls, revealing the inner workings of the Rado calibre R734 at its core. The automatic mechanical movement, adorned with an antimagnetic Nivachron™ balance spring and circular grain decoration, is a sight to behold.
In striking contrast to the dynamic dial, the rhodium-colored hour and minute hands, coated with white Super-LumiNova®, ensure legibility in any lighting condition.
Completing the ensemble is a polished black high-tech ceramic bracelet secured by a titanium three-fold clasp, offering both style and durability. With water resistance up to 5 bar (50m) and accompanied by a Special Edition certificate, the Rado True Square x Kunihiko Morinaga Special Edition is a testament to the seamless fusion of technology and design.
