Seiko Presage Kintaro Hattori Limited Edition SPB441

A new creation honors the first wristwatch to bear the Seiko name, celebrating the brand’s 100th anniversary.

Since its establishment in 1881, Seiko has consistently pursued innovation, guided by the visionary philosophy of founder Kintaro Hattori to always be “Always one step ahead of the rest.” In a pivotal moment in 1924, the company marked the initiation of the Seiko brand by introducing the first wristwatch adorned with the name “Seiko” on the dial. As we approach the centennial milestone of this historic event in the upcoming year 2024, Seiko commemorates the occasion with a special creation from the Presage collection.

This new timepiece meticulously captures the vintage essence of the original watch in every aspect. The Seiko lettering positioned at 12 o’clock evokes a sense of nostalgia by adopting the distinctive typeface of that era. The Arabic numerals, paying homage to the original, skillfully blend thick and slender lines, creating a bold and dynamic font.

In homage to the 1924 original, the watch boasts an enamel dial whose depth and beauty owe credit to the expertise of master craftsman Mitsuru Yokosawa and his colleagues specializing in enamel production. The enduring striking white appearance is a testament to the time-honored art of enamel dial-making.

Driving this creation is the new Caliber 6R5H, featuring a 24-hour sub-dial at the six o’clock position. The Arabic numerals on this sub-dial faithfully echo those of the small seconds sub-dial that occupied the same position on the original piece.

The case back and the prominent crown proudly showcase the trademark “S” registered by Kintaro in 1900 as a symbol of the Seikosha factory. Despite the challenges posed by the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923, Kintaro’s resilience prevailed, leading to the launch of the 1924 wristwatch the following year. The caseback of the new creation, just above the trademark, bears his name and a quote encapsulating his enduring philosophy for the company. Movable lugs and a pull-through leather strap, reflecting the style of the original watch’s release, ensure contemporary comfort and durability.

This commemorative timepiece will be available starting in 2024 at select Seiko retailers nationwide.
