For more than half a century, the Monaco chronograph has stood as the quintessential driver’s timepiece. TAG Heuer now presents the Monaco Chronograph Night Driver, a Limited Edition watch that serves as a contemporary and inventive homage to the racing ethos embodied by this collection, along with its iconic Monaco Blue shade. This timepiece encapsulates the enchantment of piloting a sports car on the open road under the night sky. Furthermore, it introduces a novel technical breakthrough for TAG Heuer: a dial entirely adorned with luminescence, ensuring even greater readability.
La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland – September 14, 2023: Enthusiasts who revel in the visceral connection between road, car, and their own capabilities will be entranced by the latest limited edition of the Monaco chronograph, the newly unveiled TAG Heuer Monaco Chronograph Night Driver. This timepiece draws inspiration from the midnight blue, charcoal grey, and matte black dials of the iconic vintage Monacos but embraces contemporary materials to create an instrument that elevates the driving experience, particularly at night.
This launch pays a fitting tribute to the momentous 60th anniversaries of the TAG Heuer Carrera collection and the Porsche 911 (originally known as the 901). By seamlessly blending elements from both the world of watches and automobiles, these timepieces offer a matchless chronometric experience. With this new release, the worlds of speed and precision converge, capturing the essence of the original Porsche 901’s extraordinary feat: accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 9.1 seconds, an accomplishment that stands as a defining moment in the 911’s storied history.
Driving at Night – the Road, the Car and the Watch
Driving at night possesses a certain magical allure. In the absence of distractions like scenic vistas and the bright daytime sky, the driver becomes intimately attuned to the sensations of the road and the car. The tactile connection between driver and vehicle becomes remarkably heightened in the absence of daylight, allowing the driver to sense the car’s power and agility through their hands, feet, and body. Every subtle nuance of the road and the car becomes palpable to the driver’s body and mind. A profound sense of purity and immersion envelops the driver as they share an unadulterated connection with the car and the road, and the rest of the world fades into obscurity. In the absence of extraneous stimuli, the lights, sounds, and other sensations perceived by the driver take on an entirely new level of intensity.
Now more than ever, the driver relies on their vision and the instruments at their disposal for crucial inputs. The dashboard instruments cast a soft glow through the darkness, relaying the car’s speed and monitoring vital mechanical parameters such as temperature and pressure. Another instrument assumes a pivotal role in the dark—the driver’s chronograph. This chronograph serves as both a timekeeping device and a means to measure laps, intervals, or other events. Just like the dashboard instruments, legibility becomes paramount at night, ensuring that the driver receives accurate information in an instant.
The TAG Heuer Monaco Chronograph Night Driver Limited Edition
Since its debut in 1969, the TAG Heuer Monaco has held its position as the ultimate chronograph for racers. Today, TAG Heuer introduces the Limited Edition Monaco Chronograph Night Driver, designed to be the indispensable tool for navigating the dark of night. The latest Monaco features its signature “circle in the square” dial construction, providing instant readability for the driver. In low-light conditions, the central deep grey “circle” on the dial creates a stark contrast with the bright blue Super-LumiNova® coating on the hour, minute, and chronograph seconds hands, as well as luminous dots denoting the hours. Even the minute/second hash marks glow brilliantly, allowing the driver to make precise time readings.
What truly sets the Monaco Night Driver apart are the “squares” on its dial, which transform this new chronograph into the perfect companion for drivers. These squares offer two distinct yet complementary looks, capturing the ambiance of both darkness and light. As day transitions into night, the dial’s outer portion undergoes a remarkable transformation from a cool, light grey to a radiant and vivid blue. Black-lacquered indexes indicate the hours, and the chronograph registers adopt this same luminous blue hue, providing striking contrast against the black minute and hour markings, as well as the hands on the chronograph minutes and hours counters.
The fully luminescent dial represents a remarkable technical feat for TAG Heuer, significantly enhancing legibility during nighttime driving. Leveraging the capabilities of Super-LumiNova®, the timepiece radiates luminosity across a larger surface area, ensuring that the dial remains prominently visible in the dark for up to 3 hours following a full charge.
The Monaco Chronograph Night Driver Limited Edition also pays tribute to some iconic Monaco chronographs from TAG Heuer’s historical collection. The dial of the very first Monaco chronograph, famously worn by Steve McQueen in the film “Le Mans” in 1969, was referred to as “Midnight Blue.” Over 50 years later, TAG Heuer employs modern materials to capture the deep blue radiance of the night sky. Additionally, vintage Monaco chronographs featured “charcoal grey” dials with contrasting darker registers. In daylight, the new “Night Driver” model pays homage to this classic palette.
In a driver’s chronograph, readability is paramount, but navigating a car through the night demands another crucial attribute – durability. In this regard, the new Monaco Chronograph Night Driver leverages contemporary materials to craft the ideal instrument for racing enthusiasts. The case is meticulously constructed from Grade 5 titanium and coated with black DLC (diamond-like carbon) material, ensuring both robustness and comfort during prolonged use due to the watch’s lightweight. The DLC coating of the case is tailored to withstand the rigors of racing, and key components of the chronograph, such as the pushers and crown, also feature this resilient black coating.
Each TAG Heuer timepiece must meet stringent criteria for durability, precision, and quality. This is precisely why Grade 5 titanium has been chosen for the Night Driver, marking a first for a Monaco chronograph. Renowned for its toughness and endurance, this material permits a harmonious blend of fine-brushed and polished finishes, embodying TAG Heuer’s craftsmanship and elevating the versatile aesthetics of this chronograph.
The utilization of TAG Heuer’s in-house Heuer 02 movement to drive the Monaco Chronograph Night Driver adds another crucial dimension to the new instrument’s durability. The Heuer 02 movement employs a traditional column wheel mechanism to ensure reliable operation of the chronograph, while its impressive 80-hour power reserve will keep the Night Driver running seamlessly throughout an entire weekend of racing. The sapphire caseback proudly showcases the blue markings on the black oscillating mass, along with the blue column wheel, extending this color scheme from the chronograph’s dial.
The Monaco Chronograph Night Driver Limited Edition comes complete with a calfskin strap featuring alternating large and small perforations, accentuated by bright white stitching along the strap’s edge—a design element reminiscent of Heuer’s racing chronographs from the 1960s and 70s.
TAG Heuer will introduce the Monaco Chronograph Night Driver Limited Edition in a dedicated packaging that pays homage to the Monaco collection’s racing heritage, housed in a “nomad” travel pouch. Each of the 600 limited edition pieces is individually engraved. They will be made available at TAG Heuer Boutiques, select retailers, and on www.tagheuer.com starting in October 2023.
