The Ulysse Nardin Freak One unveils its camouflage transformation
In celebration of Dubai Watch Week, Ulysse Nardin introduces the Freak ONE OPS, a unique iteration of the Freak ONE with a distinctive twist. With a diameter of 44mm, the new timepiece features a black DLC titanium case, accompanied by a khaki green color scheme that influences the special sunray-patterned barrel cover and the integrated rubber strap.
Continuing the narrative of innovative materials, the Carbonium® bezel adds a touch of sophistication. This material, known for its remarkable strength-to-lightness properties, utilizes carbon fibers akin to those used in cutting-edge aircraft wings and fuselages. Remarkably, Carbonium® is crafted from leftover materials in the aircraft manufacturing process, reducing its environmental impact by 40% compared to other carbon composites. The manufacturing process contributes to an organic marbled finish on the Freak ONE OPS’s bezel, ensuring each watch is uniquely distinguished.
With no traditional dial, the Freak ONE OPS proudly displays its calibre UN-240 Manufacture movement. The flying carousel, rotating on its axis, simultaneously indicates the minutes. The oversized oscillator and balance spring, both presented in captivating blue silicon, pay homage to the pivotal role silicon has played in the Freak’s unconventional legacy. Operating automatically, the movement boasts an impressive 90-hour power reserve.
The timepiece offers a choice between two integrated straps: one crafted in black and khaki “ballistic” rubber, and an alternative two-tone rubber strap in black and khaki. Both straps feature black DLC titanium and black ceramic folding clasps. Ulysse Nardin’s commitment to the environment is reflected in these straps, made from 30% recycled rubber sourced from production waste.
The outcome is a robust and striking timepiece that amplifies the Freak’s narrative of audacious design and in-house technical expertise.
The enduring influence of the pioneering Ulysse Nardin Freak, over two decades ago, continues to challenge the norms of fine watchmaking
In its debut in 2001, the Freak did more than redefine expectations for Ulysse Nardin watches; it ushered in a new era in Swiss fine watchmaking. During that period, mechanical watches from Switzerland typically featured hands indicating the time, a dial for their placement, and a crown set into the case flank for adjustments. The Freak, however, defied convention by eliminating these elements—no dial, no hands, and no crown—redefining the industry’s mindset. Could avant-garde watch design, coupled with significant advancements in mechanical movement technology, captivate the 21st-century watch buyer? The resounding answer: absolutely.
Over the two decades since its introduction, the Freak has become a cornerstone of high-end contemporary watchmaking. Its pioneering technologies, particularly the use of high-tech silicon to alleviate stress on critical moving parts, have set industry standards. While it initially existed outside the comfort zone of traditional Swiss watchmaking, the Freak’s influence became so profound that others in the industry followed suit.
The early models have evolved into favorites among collectors, and subsequent iterations have expanded the narrative, often by enhancing the Freak’s technical capabilities or pushing the boundaries of its limitless aesthetic appeal.
Among these iterations, the Freak ONE has consistently taken center stage in the collection, embodying the independent and free-spirited thinking that defines both the Freak and Ulysse Nardin. With no dial, hands, or crown, it remains an iconic representation of the brand’s audacious approach.
At Dubai Watch Week, Ulysse Nardin continues the Freak’s narrative with the Freak ONE OPS—short for “operations”—a khaki and black timepiece that exudes an adventurous inspiration. Backed by cutting-edge technology developed in Ulysse Nardin’s independent integrated manufacture, the Freak ONE OPS combines a casual aesthetic with its trademark innovation.
For over two decades, since its inception, there is still nothing quite like the Freak—an enduring symbol of pioneering design and technological innovation in the world of fine watchmaking.
