Vacheron Constantin Among the Pillars with Omar Al Gurg

Luxury Swiss watchmaker Vacheron Constantin, boasting nearly 270 years of expertise and heritage, has joined forces with Emirati designer Omar Al Gurg to introduce ‘Among The Pillars’, an art installation inspired by the Middle East’s lush landscapes and Islamic architecture, in celebration of Ramadan.

Al Gurg’s minimalist vision merges exquisite craftsmanship with locally sourced materials, embodying the Maison’s dedication to regional culture, innovation, and artisanal skill. The centerpiece is on display at The Dubai Mall flagship boutique’s Atrium and replicated across regional boutiques in the United Arab Emirates, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain throughout Ramadan.

Christophe Ramel, Vacheron Constantin’s Regional Managing Director for the Middle East, Indian Subcontinent, and Africa, expressed pride in collaborating with Al Gurg, hailing him as a talented artist who seamlessly integrates the region’s rich heritage with the precision of fine watchmaking and craftsmanship. Ramel highlighted the art piece’s embodiment of heritage, community values, and Islamic art, utilizing innovative and sustainable palm tree material.

Titled “Among The Pillars,” the installation reflects Al Gurg’s signature minimalist and modulable style, aligning with the Maison’s annual theme, ‘Less’ential’. Drawing inspiration from Middle Eastern culture, Al Gurg crafted a towering 4-meter masterpiece from two innovative, locally sourced materials, emphasizing Vacheron Constantin’s deep ties with the local community.

The first material, “PlyPalm,” is a novel substance derived from regional palm tree fronds, symbolizing elegance and strength. Representing the region’s heritage and the origin of time, the sturdy hexagonal pillars evoke the traditional method of marking time by a pillar’s shadow projection. The second material, “DateForm,” is a groundbreaking solid surface made from date seeds, paying homage to the traditions of the holy month and forming the backdrop of the artwork.

Vacheron Constantin’s artistry is showcased through an engraved plate atop the shorter pillars, featuring the iconic Vacheron Constantin Maltese cross, seamlessly linking haute horlogerie excellence with local craftsmanship.

For a deeper dive into the creative process, a ‘making-of’ documentary is available on the Maison’s website.
